Under the electoral laws, once candidates have been validly nominated, there is no such thing as "suspension of campaign" or "withdrawal".
Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Raymond Tam made the statement today after casting his votes in the 2016 Legislative Council General Election.
He noted that some candidates have announced publicly in recent days they will suspend their election campaign.
He said candidates and their agents must closely follow electoral laws and regulations to ensure they are complied with.
“In my view, this is no more than a political decision,” he added.
