Confirmation arrangement supported

July 14, 2016

The Government supports the Electoral Affairs Commission's arrangement to require 2016 Legislative Council Election candidates to declare that they will uphold the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Candidates must submit a confirmation form before the Returning Officer can process their nominations.

In a statement today, the Government said the measure will help the commission conduct the election in an orderly manner in accordance with the law.

The Government takes the view that advocating and promoting the "independence of Hong Kong" is contrary to the requirement to "uphold the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region".
