Zero waste:  Chief Secretary Carrie Lam (third right) visits a food recycling centre on Cheung Chau.

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam visited Islands District today to meet with Islands District Council members and exchange views with Cheung Chau youths participating in the Islands District youth network development programme organised by the Islands District Office.

Mrs Lam first met with the council and listened to members' views on various issues, including planning, transport, housing and environmental hygiene. Some members expressed support for developing Lantau and urged the Government to improve the ancillary transport facilities on Lantau.

Mrs Lam then visited Cheung Chau together with the Chairman of the Islands District Council Chow Yuk-tong, Chairman of the Cheung Chau Rural Committee Yung Chi-ming, and District Officer (Islands) Anthony Li.

Mrs Lam was briefed on the Cheung Chau Ferry Pier improvement work and ferry services during the Cheung Chau Bun Festival by Transport Department officers, and on matters relating to outside seating accommodation permission for waterfront restaurants by a Food & Environmental Hygiene Department representative.

Mr Yung briefed Mrs Lam on the preparatory work for the parade and Bun Scrambling Competition to be held on May 14.

Mrs Lam then visited the Food Recycle Land Education Centre run by the Cheung Chau Island Women’s Association. The centre recycles more than 300kg of food waste daily from about 200 families and turns it into fertiliser for planting vegetables. Mrs Lam commended the centre for its work in environmental education and encouraged the staff to continue to contribute to waste reduction.

Mrs Lam later met with Cheung Chau youths participating in the Islands District youth network development programme organised by the Islands District Office and visited the family of one of the network participants.

The youth network development programme, launched by the Islands District Office in 2014, encourages participants to care for their community and learn more about it, as well as broadening their horizons and nurturing them to become future leaders through a series of activities.

Mrs Lam said she is glad the programme has been very successful and well received by district youths. She added that the Government has all along been attaching great importance to youth work and is committed to providing young people with diversified development and learning opportunities. It will continue to strengthen networking and communication with youths at different levels.
