Chief Executive CY Leung says the Government has always prioritised the public's concerns, so there is no need to raise the question of protecting Hong Kong's interests through independence.
Speaking to reporters ahead of today's Executive Council meeting, Mr Leung said some people, including young people, believe Hong Kong's interests are affected or even eroded by the Mainland.
He said his administration has solved the problem of inadequate obstetric services by abolishing the quota for Mainland mothers giving birth in Hong Kong hospitals, and improved the housing situation by introducing the special stamp duty which has cut the number of Mainland buyers of Hong Kong properties.
He said these show the Government puts local interests first and there is no need to suggest independence as a way to protect Hong Kong's well-being.
The independence issue will be dealt with according to the law, he added.
