$50m in aid approved for Nepal victims

May 04, 2015

The Government has approved a $50 million grant to the Nepalese Government to provide emergency relief for earthquake victims there.

This follows the Legislative Council Finance Committee's approval on April 30 of a supplementary $50 million provision to replenish the Disaster Relief Fund.

The Nepalese Government has a permanent fund - the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund - to mobilise, direct and co-ordinate disaster-related relief funds under the Prime Minister’s Chairmanship. It will report to the Nepalese Government on its activities and financial performance and will account publicly for its work.

Hong Kong's Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee will ask the Nepalese Government to provide information on the disbursement of the grant for the relief activities.

The committee has received a local relief organisation’s application, and a number of organisations have indicated that they will make an application soon. The committee will expeditiously process these applications.
