Reform to take HK forward: CE

May 04, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung said achieving universal suffrage in the Chief Executive election in 2017 is an important step in Hong Kong's democratic development.

Speaking to reporters at the airport before departing for Boston, Mr Leung said only after universal suffrage in the Chief Executive election is achieved can the Government start planning for universal suffrage in the Legislative Council election.

He said the Government will try its best to seek support for the proposal it has put forward, and welcomes discussion with the pan-democrats.

Mr Leung said he will give two speeches tomorrow in Boston, on Hong Kong’s role as a super connector, and how it helps enhance cooperation between the Mainland and US - not only in economics and trade, but also in areas such as talent exchange, education, and innovation and technology.
