Consider public views, CS urges lawmakers

March 02, 2015

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam urges legislators to take public sentiment into account when making decisions on constitutional development proposals.

Briefing reporters today, Mrs Lam said many people would like to exercise their right to elect the Chief Executive through one man, one vote, and urged lawmakers to take this into account.

During the consultation, political parties expressed their view that the Chief Executive’s election method should comply with the framework set out in the National People's Congress' decisions made in August, Mrs Lam noted.

The Government will study the political parties' proposals carefully, she added.

Speaking on Prof Albert Chen’s blank-vote proposal, Mrs Lam said the political parties held no enthusiasm for this suggestion during the consultation, and she believed it would be difficult for it to gain political parties’ support.
