CS happy with Sichuan progress

May 25, 2012
Chief Secretary Stephen Lam concluded his two-day visit to Sichuan today, saying he is pleased to see Hong Kong-funded reconstruction projects are running well.

He inspected projects in Dujiangyan, including the Sichuan Olympic School and the Giant Panda Conservation & Disease Control Centre.

The school opened in April, after receiving RMB135 million in funding from the Hong Kong Jockey Club. It will recruit and train young and talented Sichuan athletes.

Mr Lam said students are studying hard in the new school, which will be a good base to facilitate sports exchange between Hong Kong and Mainland youths. He played badminton with a teacher and student, and spoke with them about the students' learning environment.

The control centre, the first of its kind in the world, will be completed by year's end, after receiving RMB129 million in funding from the HKSAR Trust Fund.

The construction of other projects is also being conducted smoothly, he said, adding construction quality and the well-being of future users are top priority.
