Consumer rights protection growing: Stephen Ip

*

Rising consumer complaints show people's growing awareness in protecting their rights.

Secretary for Economic Development & Labour Stephen Ip told legislators today that the Consumer Council received 2,130, 1,862, and 3,165 complaints in the past three years respectively, concerning deceptive, misleading and unfair practices in consumer transactions.

Meanwhile, similar complaints received by the Customs & Excise Department were 1,267, 1,526 and 2,208 respectively.

"The increase in complaints received indicates growing awareness by consumers on the protection of their rights and interests," Mr Ip said, adding that the fundamental safeguard is to encourage consumers to exercise their rights and make choices.

.

He said current legislation is adequate to protect consumer rights and deter unscrupulous activities by shops, and that Police and Customs officers take constant enforcement action against illicit business practices.
