The Development Bureau will seek $1.185 billion for the Kai Tak Development's detailed design and construction, and the detailed design of environmental improvement works to the Kai Tak approach channel.
Works will involve building new roads, drainage and sewerages, and landscape works at the former Kai Tak Airport's north and south aprons, improving subways across Prince Edward Road East and the vehicular bridge across the approach channel.
Site investigation and detailed design of new infrastructure for the former runway and of the environmental improvement works to the approach channel in Kwun Tong typhoon shelter - including in situ bioremediation treatment on contaminated sediments, creating a 600m-wide opening at the former runway and a piled deck above it to provide land to accommodate the proposed Metro Park on top - will also be conducted.
According to a paper submitted to the Legislative Council Panel on Development today, the bureau plans to start these items in July for completion in 2013. About 739 jobs will be created.
The works will serve public housing, the Kai Tak Government Offices, schools, the first berth of the cruise terminal and a nine-hectare runway park, and commercial and residential developments.
The works will not have a long-term environmental impact. Suitable mitigation measures will be implemented to control short-term impacts. Click here for details.
