Red Bull samples contain traces of cocaine
*
Department of Health

Samples of Red Bull Cola, Red Bull Sugar-free and Red Bull Energy Drink sent to the Government Laboratory for analysis showed traces of cocaine, in the range of 0.1-0.3 micrograms per litre.

The Department of Health and Centre for Food Safety advised today that given the extremely low level of cocaine in the products, normal consumption is unlikely to pose psychotropic or adverse health effects. More samples are being tested.

Cocaine is a dangerous drug regulated under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance (Cap. 134). Possessing and dealing in the drug is a criminal offence, except in restricted circumstances permitted by the law.

"We are now seeking legal advice on the possible legal liability of various parties including importers and retailers. While the major supermarket chains have already taken the products off their shelves, importers and other retailers may wish to stop selling such products from now, as a precautionary measure," Commissioner for Narcotics Sally Wong said.

The Government will meet with parties concerned as soon as possible to discuss the matter.
