Support for Zheng Sheng students urged

*

Chief Executive Donald Tsang urges the public, especially the Mui Wo community, to support rehabilitating young drug abusers.

Speaking at a Foreign Correspondents' Club luncheon today, Mr Tsang said he has been following the recent developments of the relocation of the Christian Zheng Sheng College.

"I watched on TV the town hall meeting in Mui Wo yesterday and noticed how emotional the responses were from some local residents," he said.

"Many non-governmental organisations in Hong Kong are devoted to rehabilitating young drug abusers. They deserve our full support."

He said a little help and guidance from society will make a big difference in the young people's lives.

"As a father, I know only too well that no parent would want to see their children abuse drugs. But young people do sometimes go astray. When our children make mistakes, they need forbearance," he said.

"Just a little help and guidance from us can make a big difference in their lives. I hope Hong Kong society generally, and the Mui Wo community in particular, can embrace these young people with love and give them a second chance."

Chief Secretary Henry Tang echoed the Chief Executive's plea. Mr Tang, who was visiting Zhuhai, said he hopes the public can welcome the rehabilitated young drug abusers to rejoin society.
