The Department of Health reminds the public to guard against Dengue fever after confirmation of two new cases in Macau.

Forty-three confirmed cases have been recorded in Hong Kong this year - 42 imported, and one locally contracted.

Dengue fever is a viral illness transmitted by the bite of the infectious Aedes mosquito. The incubation period is three to 14 days. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain and skin rash.

To prevent mosquito breeding:

* put all used cans and bottles into covered dustbins;

* change water for plants at least once a week, leaving no water in the saucers underneath flowerpots;

* cover tightly all water containers, wells and water storage tanks; and,

* keep all drains free from blockage.

Travellers should:

* wear long-sleeved clothes and trousers;

* use insect repellent over exposed parts of the body; and,

* use mosquito screens or nets when the room is not air-conditioned.

People who return from a Dengue-infected area and fall sick within one month should immediately consult a doctor and give their complete travel history to ensure early diagnosis and management.
