Edward Yau speaks at climate summit
*

Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau has shared Hong Kong's experience in formulating strategies and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with political and international leaders at the Copenhagen Climate Summit for Mayors.

Addressing the summit's opening press conference this morning, Mr Yau said: "Sustainability is key reason why Hong Kong is keen to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. We have developed a low-carbon strategy based on low-energy consumption which can help sustain economic growth while at the same time minimise our carbon footprint."

The mayors speaking at the press conference agreed while the UN negotiations are going on, cities should act on climate change daily by creating comprehensive solutions in energy efficiency, transport, waste, lighting, renewable energy, water resources, behavioural change, and in planning and infrastructure.

Mr Yau also joined the presentations showcasing future developments in urban cycling.

He will attend a VIP lunch hosted by the Climate Leaders Summit 2009 and deliver a speech at a roundtable discussion on Low Carbon Transport-Mass Transit and Green Vehicles.

He will also attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference High Level Opening Ceremony at the Bella Centre and the Seal the Deal in Copenhagen reception and dinner.
