July wetter than usual

*
HK Observatory

July was wetter than usual seeing 386.7mm of rain, compared with the normal monthly figure of 323.5mm. However, the accumulated rainfall since January 1 was about 18% below normal at 1,080.1mm.

On July 1, the maximum temperature rose to 34.6 degrees Celsius, the highest so far this year. Some parts of the New Territories recorded temperatures as high as 37 degrees.

Tropical storm Kompasu came within 800km of Hong Kong on July 14 and the Standby Signal Number 1 was issued that evening. On July 16 squally heavy showers began to affect Hong Kong with gales experienced in some areas. The year's first typhoon signals 3 and 8 were issued on that day and Kompasu finally made landfall over Sai Kung in the afternoon.

The rain bands associated with the remnants of Kompasu affected Hong Kong the next day, bringing over 100mm to Tsuen Wan and the northeastern part of Lantau. It fined up on July 18.

The return of an unstable maritime airstream gave rise to heavy showers and thunderstorms on July 28 and 29. The heavy downpour on July 29 saw over 100mm of rain in Sha Tin, Sai Kung and eastern Kowloon. The weather remained cloudy with some showers on July 30.

Five tropical cyclones occurred in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea during the month.
