12 beaches rated 'good' this weekend

Beach water quality

Sunny spring: Be sure to check the latest beach water quality before going to swim this weekend.

Water quality of 12 beaches are rated 'Good' (Grade 1) for swimming this weekend,  while Golden and Silverstrand Beaches rated 'Fair' (Grade 2).

The Environmental Protection Department said there was no change in the grading of the beaches compared with the previous week.

Grade 1 beaches are Big Wave Bay, Shek O, Chung Hom Kok, South Bay, Deep Water Bay, Stanley Main, Hairpin, St. Stephen's, Middle Bay, Turtle Cove, Repulse Bay, and Clear Water Bay Second Beaches.

All the above beaches are equipped with shark nets.

Seven gazetted beaches - Anglers', Approach, Ting Kau, Casam, Gemini, Hoi Mei Wan and Lido - are closed to swimmers year round because of poor water quality.

The public is advised not to swim at these closed beaches.

Many beaches are likely to be more polluted than their grades suggest during and after heavy rain. Bathers should avoid swimming at beaches for up to three days after a storm or heavy rainfall.

For more details on beach grading, click here or call the beach hotline, 2511 6666.
