February warmer, wetter than usual

*

February was warmer and slightly wetter than usual. It had 140.7 hours of bright sunshine - 43 hours more than usual. Nearly 52 millimeters of rain fell, 8% more than the 48mm average for the month.

The monthly mean temperature of 17.2 degrees Celsius was 1.3 degrees above the normal figure.

Under the influence of a maritime airstream, the first day of February was mainly cloudy. It became misty the next morning, and the arrival of a cold front in the evening marked the beginning of a spell of cold, rainy weather.

Coldest Spring Lantern Festival on record

The temperature fell to a minimum of 7.8 degrees Celsius on the Spring Lantern Festival on February 5, making it the coldest such festival on record.

On February 8, there were reports of frost at Tai Mo Shan where the air temperature was close to freezing. It turned fine and dry on February 9 while the temperature that morning dropped further to 7.7 degrees Celsius, the lowest recorded so far this winter.

The fine and dry conditions persisted until February 15. As winds freshened from the northeast on February 16, the weather became cloudy with a few light rain patches. It became brighter in the next five days.

On February 22, the weather became warmer and the temperature reached 24.8 degrees Celsius, the highest of the month.

One tropical cyclone occurred in the western North Pacific during the month.
