A three-day international seminar on the use and interpretation of satellite and radar data in tropical cyclone forecasting was concluded today.
This was the second stop of the World Meteorological Organisation Typhoon Committee's roving seminars being held in Seoul, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
The seminar explored how the latest scientific research findings could be used to enhance the capability of meteorological services in predicting tropical cyclones.
HK Observatory Scientific Officer Dr PW Li was one of the lecturers for the seminar, along with the University of Guam's Dr Mark Lander and Seoul National University's Dr BJ Sohn.
There were also participants from Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam, the Mainland, Macau, South Korea and Malaysia.
Well organised
Renato Molina of the Philippines said the Hong Kong seminar was very well organised and enjoyable.
"It offered me a precious chance to discuss with the experts on satellite and radar applications the analysis and forecasting of tropical cyclones."
He said the knowledge he gained will be very useful for daily forecasting in his homeland, and the advanced technology and facilities at the HK Observatory are impressive.
The observatory is one of the most advanced centres in the region in tropical cyclone monitoring and forecasting.
In view of its special expertise in radar applications, the committee has invited the observatory's experts to speak at the second and third stops of the roving seminar.
