NT taxi fare cuts in the works

*

A six-month fare concession the New Territories taxi trade proposed may soon be implemented.

The proposal will be gazetted pending Executive Council approval and is expected to be enforced by mid-June.

It will see taxi fares for the first 2 kilometres and the first seven incremental charges remain at $12.50 and $1.20, respectively. However, incremental charges thereafter will be reduced from $1.20 to 90 cents.

Secretary for Environment, Transport & Works Dr Sarah Liao said the government is supportive of the fare-concession proposal and will help to implement it as soon as possible.

She reiterated that the concession is a request by the trade, and that it may help taxi operators garner more business.

Dr Liao said a related opinion survey is being conducted on the urban taxi trade.
