Family-friendly work ethics urged
*

Family-friendly employment practices will be conducive to harmonious relations, leading to an all-win situation for employers and employees, Permanent Secretary for Economic Development & Labour Paul Tang says.

Family-friendly employment uses people-oriented management practices, helping employees fulfil their work and family responsibilities, and strike a work-life balance.

Speaking at the seminar on family-friendly employment practices today, Mr Tang said such practices will help employees meet family needs to relieve their stress and boost their work efficiency and morale.

"On the other hand, employers can retain talent by adopting these measures. This will not only reduce their expenses in recruiting and training new staff but also build up a positive image for the enterprises," he added.

People-oriented management

He urged all sectors in the community to collaborate in fostering a family-friendly work culture and environment, adding that the Government will play its role as a facilitator in promoting people-oriented management practices, such as the five-day week initiative. Other practices that organisations may consider include family leave benefits, flexible working hours or counselling services.

The Women's Commission has launched a campaign urging all public bodies and private companies, regardless of their size and nature, to offer at least one family-friendly employment practice so that the community can benefit from a more harmonious society.
