A team of secondary-school students has won one gold, three silvers and two bronzes for Hong Kong at the 47th International Mathematical Olympiad. Their outstanding performance lifted Hong Kong's ranking to an all-time high of 14th, up from 17th last year.
The Olympiad was held from July 10 to 18, in Slovenia, with 90 teams of up to six members participating.
China scored the highest overall marks while Russia ranked second and South Korea third.
Gold medallist Tsoi Yun-pui from Sha Tin Government Secondary School is the first Hong Kong team member to win four golds in successive attempts in cross-territory mathematical competitions.
Chung On-yip from Queen Elizabeth School, Fong Pok-wai from SKH Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School and Hui Jack from Queen's College received silver medals.
Wong Chiu-wai from Joseph's College and Yuen Chak-hei from Queen's College took bronze medals.
Competition aims to nurture, stimulate
The competition's main aim is to promote mathematics education, foster friendly international relationships with fellow mathematicians, and nurture and stimulate the development of mathematically gifted young people.
All students are members of the "Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme" under the Education & Manpower Bureau.
