Review on instruction medium to go ahead
*

The Education Commission will review the Medium of Instruction Guidance in the 2003/04 school year as scheduled.

The Secretary for Education and Manpower Arthur Li said during his visit to the new Joint Admission Centre in Kwai Chung today that results of this year's Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination will be given to the Commission's working group as one of the data.

Professor Li was pleased that there were 48 Chinese-medium schools whose standard of English has improved. He said the Bureau will study their good practices.

Eight JACs are set up this year.  They are in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing, Tai Po, North, Sai Kung, Shatin, Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Southern Districts.

About 20,000 students get S6 places

A total of 19,454 Secondary Five leavers have obtained S6 places on the first day of the Secondary Six Admission Procedure. A total of 5,050 S6 places in public sector schools are still available for application tomorrow.

To assist students in seeking school places, EMB has been releasing S6 vacancy information on its website and by the Interactive Voice Response telephone hotline system at 3560 6888.

Students may also obtain such information on the Internet through the public computers at public libraries, District Offices, community centres and community halls as well as all ESD kiosks.

In addition, three advisory centres jointly operated by EMB and the Labour Department will provide advice and counselling service on careers and further studies. Those in need may call the counselling hotline 2152 5055 , or visit the online chatroom.
