New challenge: William Chan will become Director of Legal Aid from January 4.

William Chan will succeed Benjamin Cheung as Director of Legal Aid from January 4.

Mr Chan, 56, was a Legal Aid Counsel in 1987 and was promoted to Assistant Principal Legal Aid Counsel in 1994. He became Deputy Principal Legal Aid Counsel in 1997 and then Deputy Director of Legal Aid in 2004.

Secretary for Civil Service Denise Yue said Mr Chan has extensive professional knowledge and experience in legal aid work.

She wished Mr Cheung a happy retirement and thanked him for his dedicated service.
