Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Stephen Lam will visit Taipei June 5 to 6 at the invitation of the Mainland Affairs Council to discuss further enhancement of Hong Kong-Taiwan ties.
Mr Lam will hold a meeting with the council's senior officials and call on the Taipei City Government.
"During our visit we will focus primarily on discussions with the Mainland Affairs Council on further co-operation and liaison between Hong Kong and Taiwan," Mr Lam said.
He cited some new initiatives undertaken last year, including the establishment of the Trade Development Council's Taipei office and the HK-Taiwan intercity forum organised with Taichung City in April.
"As we move ahead we believe we should continue to focus on our co-operation with Taiwan in the trade and economic sphere. There is lots of work to be done and we hope this visit will help promote stronger ties between the two places," Mr Lam said, adding Hong Kong may establish an official or semi-official presence in Taiwan under the right conditions.
Mr Lam will be accompanied by Permanent Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Joshua Law, and Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Bureau and Commerce & Economic Development Bureau officers.
He will leave Hong Kong June 4. During his absence Under Secretary for Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Raymond Tam will be acting secretary.
