HK grads launch signature campaign in Canada

Vancouver mayor joins signature campaign
Special delivery: Richmond City Mayor Malcolm Brodie signs his name, pledging the Vancouver suburb's support of the signature campaign to salute healthcare workers in Canada and Hong Kong who are selflessly fighting SARS.

Four Hong Kong universities' alumni associations in Vancouver and Toronto have launched a nationwide campaign to gather signatures as an expression of appreciation to healthcare professionals in Hong Kong and Canada involved in the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Alumni associations of the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Polytechnic University and Baptist University have jointly organised the campaign. It pays tribute to healthcare professionals for devoting themselves selflessly in fighting SARS.

It has the support of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Canada, the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto and the Community Coalition Concerned About SARS in Toronto. Many organisations and trade bodies are pledging their support, also.

The Chinese media in Canada, including the Fairchild Media Group, Sing Tao Daily, Ming Pao Daily and Sing Tao China Radio, will spread the message throughout the community.

The Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Canada, Rosanna Ure, welcomed the initiative. "We are truly grateful to the organisers for their community spirit and their tireless efforts and wholehearted contribution to bring this campaign to fruition."

Mrs Ure noted that Hong Kong has been fighting an unprecedented battle with a hitherto unknown virus in the past 50 days and is beginning to see the situation stabilised. Canada is also affected by SARS though to a lesser extent.

"Our communities owe a lot to the medical and healthcare professionals in Hong Kong and Canada and the signature campaign is a good way to convey our appreciation."

A ceremony in a popular shopping mall kicked off the campaign in Vancouver. Three days of signature-gathering activities will follow at the mall.

An electronic signature campaign will launch in Toronto. Deputy Director of Health, Dr PY Lam, who is in the city for an international symposium, will be present to pledge his support.
