FS pledges to serve the public with extra caution

*

Financial Secretary Antony Leung said he has learned a lesson from the car purchase incident, adding that he will exercise extra caution in future.

Speaking during the motion debate on the vote of no confidence in the Financial Secretary at the Legislative Council today, Mr Leung said he wants to continue to serve the public and will try his utmost to overcome every challenge ahead.

"Hong Kong is now facing a series of challenges and I want to stay in my post to serve the public," he said.

Apart from helping the people and the sectors which were seriously affect by the SARS outbreak, the Government is planning to revitalise Hong Kong's economy, Mr Leung added.

In the medium-term, the Government needs to create job opportunities and help Hong Kong get through the structural change in the economy.

The Government also needs to solve the fiscal deficit problem or risk social and financial instability.

"I will try my best to tackle all challenges ahead," he promised.

He admitted that he had learned how to face his mistakes and is willing to accept public criticism.

He said he understood that it is important to give a full explanation to the public. He said he had no intention to hide the facts or evade tax.

He said he has accepted the Chief Executive's criticism of his actions.
