November 29, 2016

Majestic ceremony

Majestic ceremony:  Chief Secretary Carrie Lam opens the "Ceremony & Celebration - The Grand Weddings of the Qing Emperors" exhibition.

The Heritage Museum will open an exhibition on the grand weddings of the Qing emperors tomorrow.

Running until February 27, the show features more than 153 sets of valuable exhibits selected from the Palace Museum in Beijing, comprising documents, portraits, costumes, personal ornaments, dowry objects, wedding ritual objects and court musical instruments.

Opening the exhibition today, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam said the superb craftsmanship of the wedding items not only demonstrates the splendour of the imperial palace but will also deepen visitors' understanding of the culture of wedding etiquette.

Highlight exhibits include 10 meticulously executed pictures selected from the comprehensive illustrated record of the grand wedding of Zaitian (the Guangxu Emperor), and a gold seal engraved with "Huanghou zhibao" (Empress's seal) and surmounted by a dragon knob.

Also on display will be replicas of the Chinese emperor wedding room and the Empress's Phoenix Chair.

The exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure & Cultural Services Department and the Palace Museum.
