Shakespeare tops arts agenda

March 14, 2016

The Leisure & Cultural Services Department will hold a host of arts and entertainment programmes this year featuring local and overseas artists.

Outlining its cultural programme for the year at a press conference today, the department said the programmes include the staging of works by William Shakespeare and Tang Xianzu to commemorate the 400th anniversary of their deaths.

Overseas performing bodies like the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the Theatre Republique of Denmark will take to the stage, along with opera troupes from the Mainland.

There will be an exhibition on prominent martial arts novelist Jin Yong whose works like The Legend of the Condor Heroes have been adapted into movies, television series and dramas.

This year will also feature performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra, modern Spanish flamenco dancer Maria Pages and Cuban ballet dancer Carlos Acosta.

The department said construction of the East Kowloon Cultural Centre started in January. It will open in 2021.

Additional libraries will also be built in Sha Tin and Fanling.
