Summer Reading Month 2014 kicked off today at the Hong Kong Central Library alongside a thematic children's exhibition, The Earth & I: Sustainable Development.
The event aims to encourage children to cherish the earth's resources for a better future through colourful exhibits such as 3-D installations of a greenhouse, a washing machine and an imitation tram station.
The Summer Reading Month programme, featuring family activities and workshops, aims to encourage parent-child reading during the summer vacation and to make use of library resources.
A prize presentation ceremony for the Competition on Story Writing in Chinese for Students 2014 was also held. This year the competition received about 1,400 entries. The winning entries have found inspiration in daily life, with the works ranging from heart-warming tales of families to stories about environmental protection, school life and social issues.
The exhibition runs from today until August 18 at the library's Exhibition Gallery.
