Student numbers to be verified

August 29, 2017

Education Bureau officers will check student attendance when the new school term starts next month to verify the enrolment number reported by schools.

Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung made the statement to the media today after reports of two more schools inflating their student numbers to secure more government funding.

Earlier this month Hing Tak School in Tuen Mun was alleged to have "phantom students", those who are absent for extended periods of time, on its register to boost enrolment.

Mr Yeung said the bureau will take measures to ensure the information submitted by schools is accurate.

"In the middle of September we will do a headcount. We will also discuss with the schools different areas, including the reporting as well as the cases when someone is being promoted to different grades.

"It is very important the schools report accurate and timely information to the Education Bureau."
