November 29, 2016

The Education Bureau today praised Hong Kong students for their outstanding performance in the Trends in International Mathematics & Science Study 2015.

Hong Kong’s Primary Four students ranked second and its Secondary Two students ranked fourth in mathematics.

In science, Hong Kong Primary Four students ranked fifth and Secondary Two students ranked sixth.

The study, organised by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, aims to study achievements in mathematics and science at Grade 4 and Grade 8, equivalent to P4 and S2 in Hong Kong.

Nearly 60 countries and regions have participated in the assessments.

The study also registered a greater percentage of Hong Kong students having reached the advanced level of the international benchmark in both subjects and both grades, compared with the previous one.

The percentage of Hong Kong students reaching the advanced level in mathematics was 45% for P4 and 37% for S2, up from 37% and 34% in 2011.

In science it was 16% for P4 and 12% for S2, compared to 9% for both in 2011.
