Student suicide report submitted

July 22, 2016

The Committee on Prevention of Student Suicides today submitted a progress report to Secretary for Education Eddie Ng.

The committee found there were complicated causes for each student suicide case. Over 90% of those cases were caused by the interaction of multiple complicated factors.

The report listed 11 suggestions to enhance timely and appropriate care and support for at-risk students.

Mr Ng said the Education Bureau accepts the recommendations and will implement six measures in the new school year.

The measures include the launch of the “Joyful@School Campaign” to promote students’ mental well-being, a pilot scheme to enhance care for students with mental health needs and training for teachers to identify at-risk students.

Mr Ng noted that the bureau will also consider other suggestions mentioned in the report, adding that he expects to receive the full report in October.
