3D printing helps STEM

July 13, 2016

Teaching students 3D printing technology strengthens STEM, or science, technology, engineering and mathematics, education.

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng told lawmakers today schools can submit proposals related to 3D printing technology according to their needs, with 14 approved applicants in the past three years.

"It was proposed in the 2015 Policy Address to strengthen STEM education to strengthen students’ ability in integration and application of knowledge and skills learnt in different learning areas, and enhance their creativity. Learning and application of 3D printing technology provides a typical example of STEM education."

He said the Education Bureau has organised workshops and seminars on 3D printing technology for teachers and will liaise with professional bodies to enhance teacher competence in applying the technology in teaching.

He added that some courses in senior secondary “applied learning” have incorporated basic knowledge about 3D printing technology, and all STEM-related curricula are being updated to provide more concrete exemplars for schools.
