Inquiry launched into student suicides

March 10, 2016

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng will form a committee to investigate recent student suicide cases and recommend preventive measures.

Mr Ng chaired a meeting today to discuss the matter with representatives from the education sector and related groups.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Ng said the committee's members will include school representatives, parents, professionals and officials.

It will submit a report to the Government in six months. If necessary an interim report may be compiled after three or four months, he added.

He said the concerted efforts of society are necessary to examine the different and complicated causes involved in the cases. Students' emotions should be attended to and support provided when needed. More should also be done to instil positive thinking among students, he added.

In the coming months the Education Bureau will hold seminars and talks by educational psychologists and professional counsellors for schools and parents to enhance their awareness to suicidal intents and knowledge on the channels for assistance.

The bureau will form a specialised team to respond and give support to requests from schools. It will also produce information kits on identifying emotional problems and how to seek assistance.

Mr Ng said the Government will continue to look into the matter with stakeholders and come up with measures to prevent similar incidents.
