Science studies fair opens

Inno expo

Inno expo:  The Student Education Fair on Science, Technology & Mathematics 2016 is on until January 23 at the Science Park.

Secretary for Education Eddie Ng opened the Student Education Fair on Science, Technology & Mathematics 2016 at the Science Park today.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Ng said the Education Bureau is sparing no effort to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to foster students' innovative thinking.

The country's economic development in recent years has created huge demand for professional talents in science and technology. If Hong Kong can make use of its advantages to capitalise on this opportunity and actively cultivate innovative thinking in young talents, it will bring many opportunities for young people to unleash their potential, he said.

Mr Ng noted that through promoting STEM education in schools, more learning activities will be provided for students to effectively integrate their knowledge in science, technology and mathematics, allowing them to make use of their inquiring ability, as well as collaboration and problem-solving skills.

"It is also hoped that students can cultivate positive values and attitudes, and develop creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship," he said.

Eighty primary and secondary schools have set up STEM-themed booths, and more than 10 tertiary institutions and professional bodies will provide information on STEM education.

The fair features biotechnology workshops, astronomy programmes, guided tours, talks and sharing sessions, and participants can join activities such as robot-making and bacterial DNA extraction experiments.

Information on further studies and career opportunities in STEM-related fields is also available.

There are guided tours of the Science Park's exhibits and visitors can view 40 local inventions that apply STEM-related knowledge at Smart Living@Science Park.

The fair is open from 10am to 5pm in the park's Grand Hall.
