Unemployment steady at 3.3%

November 17, 2015

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.3% in August-October, matching that for the July-September period, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The underemployment rate remained at 1.4%.

Increases in the unemployment rate mainly showed in the professional and business services, information and communications, and retail sectors.

Total employment decreased by 6,300 to 3,789,900, while the labour force shrank by 9,900 to 3,922,200.

There were 132,300 unemployed and 53,600 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said that while the labour market has remained largely stable in overall terms so far this year, there are downside risks to the near-term economic outlook, especially the persistent weak trend in inbound tourism.

The Government will stay vigilant and closely monitor whether these developments might entail more apparent impact on the labour market going forward, he added.
