Lead found in kindergarten

November 04, 2015

One of two water samples collected from Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Kei Oi Nursery School in Sham Shui Po has been found to exceed the World Health Organisation lead limit.

The Education Bureau today announced the water test results of another batch of kindergartens.

The tainted sample comes from the tap of a wall-mounted dispenser in the school kitchen and was found to contain lead content of 13 micrograms per litre, which exceeds the WHO standard of 10.

The water in the dispenser was used for drinking by both staff and students. The Department of Health will arrange blood tests for 101 students.

The Government is testing the lead level of water samples from kindergartens as well as public and direct subsidy scheme schools built with government funding since 2005.

It has completed checks on 602 kindergartens and schools so far, with 594 passing the tests.
