Unemployment rate dips to 3.2%

May 19, 2015

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.2% in the February-April quarter, down on the 3.3% figure for January-March, the Census & Statistics Department announced today.

The underemployment rate fell from 1.4% to 1.3%.

Decreases in the unemployment rate were mainly observed in the information and communications, retail, and professional and business services (excluding cleaning and similar activities) sectors.

As for the underemployment rate, a decrease was mainly seen in the construction sector.

Total employment dropped by 8,800 on the previous quarter to 3,792,300. The labour force decreased by 8,600 to 3,919,800.

There were 127,500 unemployed people and 49,400 underemployed people.

Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung said the labour market remained largely tight in the period and the near-term outlook will hinge on overall economic growth, in particular, the performance of domestic demand and inbound tourism.
