Space design contest opens

October 14, 2014
Lift off

Lift off:  Productivity Council Executive Director Agnes Mak, Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs Gracie Foo and Deputy Secretary for Education Catherine Chan launch the competition.

The Home Affairs Bureau has launched the Space Science Experiment Design Competition for Hong Kong secondary school students.

Applications are open until February 27 and winning entries will have a chance of being taken aboard the Tiangong-2 space station in 2016.

Launching the event today, Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs Gracie Foo said the competition will promote young people's interest in space science and enhance their knowledge in the nation's space technology development.

Secondary schools can form teams to enter the contest. The judging panel will shortlist 20 top teams based on the applications' innovation, scientific validity, experimental feasibility, safety, and presentation clarity.

Shortlisted teams will receive technical guidance from experts and undergo a final assessment interview to compete for the Champion, 1st Runner Up, 2nd Runner Up, Creative and Best Potential awards.

The Hong Kong Productivity Council will help to construct the winning experiment designs into models that can be used in space.

Winners will also have the opportunity to visit Beijing Aerospace City or the spacecraft launch centre and meet space engineers.
