Rehabilitation work:  Twenty-five inmates received certificates for completing vocational training courses such as this one in timber formwork.

25 inmates pass vocational training

August 27, 2014

Twenty-five Tong Fuk Correctional Institution inmates were given certificates today for completing vocational courses on timber formwork, Chinese cookery, and Chinese restaurant service.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, member of the Committee on Community Support for Rehabilitated Offenders Edwin Cheng said a steady job and employment opportunities are crucial in fostering an inmate’s determination to turn over a new leaf.

He said he hopes the trainees get the chance to demonstrate what they have learned upon release and work for their own future.

Noting three of the 25 trainees are local non-Chinese inmates who completed the timber formwork course, Correctional Services Superintendent (Vocational Training) Louisa Yeung said the department encourages people of all ethnic groups in custody to apply for vocational training courses to obtain qualifications to facilitate their smooth reintegration into society upon release.

The department offers more than 30 vocational training courses covering construction, engineering, food and beverage, retail, business, tourism, beauty care, logistics, laundry services, information technology, environmental services, healthcare and transport.
