Back-to-school health alert issued

August 26, 2014

The Centre for Health Protection today called on parents to protect their children against seasonal illness by observing good personal, food and environmental hygiene as the new school year approaches.

It said outbreaks of hand, foot and mouth disease, flu-like illness, chickenpox and other infectious diseases may surge when school resumes.

Students who develop symptoms like a skin rash, fever, diarrhoea or vomiting should see a doctor and not attend school.

The centre urged parents to vaccinate their children against influenza before the winter season. Eligible children aged six months to six years, and those attending pre-primary institutions, can receive shots from enrolled doctors under the Childhood Influenza Vaccination Subsidy Scheme from October 6.
