HK 5th in digital literacy

June 28, 2011
Hong Kong students ranked fifth in the 19 countries and regions participating in a recent digital reading literacy study.

The Programme for International Student Assessment 2009 is a three-year international study held by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development. It assesses the scientific, reading and mathematical literacy of 15-year-olds, collecting data on factors explaining differences in performance, and evaluating the effectiveness of the education system in the participating countries and regions.

The assessment is the fourth cycle of the study, which has been conducted in a three-year cycle since 2000. The Chinese University of Hong Kong was commissioned by the Education Bureau to participate in the assessment and the key findings were released in December last year.

The results of the first-ever assessment of students' digital reading literacy were announced today. Nearly 1,450 students from 151 secondary schools participated in the examination. The results showed Hong Kong students' socio-economic status seems to have less effect on their performance as compared with other countries or regions.

The bureau said the good performance of Hong Kong students again validates that Hong Kong education is heading in the right direction. However, compared to the top three countries, Hong Kong has fewer high achievers.

The bureau said improvements can be made when more assessment data and information of a similar type is available.
