Foreign domestic helpers' wages to rise

June 01, 2011
Foreign domestic helpers' minimum allowable wage will rise by $160, from $3,580 to $3,740 per month - a 4.5% increase.

The food allowance in lieu of free food for helpers will also rise by $25, from not less than $750 to not less than $775 per month.

Under the standard employment contract, employers must provide helpers with food free of charge, but may choose to pay a food allowance.

The adjustments will apply to all contracts signed on or after June 2.

The Immigration Department will still process contracts signed today or before with the existing wage and food allowance, provided the applications reach the department on or before June 29.

Helpers’ wage rates are regularly reviewed, taking into account Hong Kong's general economic and employment situation, reflected through a basket of economic indicators including the relevant income movement, price changes and the labour market situation.
