Safe cycling campaign to start

June 14, 2016

Police will launch a week-long citywide campaign tomorrow to promote safe cycling and will take stringent action against cycling offences.

From January to April there were 570 traffic accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 586 casualties. The figures are down 35% and 36% compared to the same period last year.

Four cyclists died in those accidents, one more than in the same period of 2015.

Police said cyclists must obey all traffic laws that apply to drivers and are subject to the Road Traffic Ordinance. They should also take heed of other road users.

Common cycling offences include failing to comply with traffic signs or road markings, riding on the footpath, carrying another person, carrying any animal or article which obstructs the cyclist's view and riding without lights at night or in poor visibility.
