Officials to attend UN hearing

November 13, 2015

A seven-member team from the Hong Kong Government will attend the hearing of the United Nations Committee against Torture under the Convention against Torture & Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on November 17 and 18 in Geneva.

The Hong Kong representatives, led by Permanent Secretary for Security Joshua Law, will join as a part of the China delegation.

Other Hong Kong team members come from the Constitutional & Mainland Affairs Bureau, the Department of Justice, and the Police.

They will explain to the committee the contents of the Hong Kong's third periodic report under the convention and answer the committee's questions on the implementation of the convention in Hong Kong.

The report was submitted to the UN in 2013 as part of China's sixth periodic report. It details the progress on the implementation of the convention in the HKSAR since 2008 when the committee considered the second periodic report and addresses issues set out in the committee's concluding observations on the second report.
