11 arrested for pirating games

August 28, 2015

Customs officers have arrested 11 men, seizing 142 pirated video games and circumvention devices worth $60,000 in Sham Shui Po.

The arrestees, aged 24 to 38, were shop owners and sales staff.

Officers found some of the shops did not have a business registration and could change their company names easily, hindering investigations and putting consumer rights at risk.

The arrests were made on August 26.

The Copyright Ordinance prohibits the selling circumvention devices or pirated video games. The maximum penalty is four years’ jail.

Call the Customs hotline - 2545 6182 - to report suspected piracy activities.
