Gov't takes violent act seriously: CE

January 13, 2015

The Government takes illegal activities seriously, particularly those involving violence, Chief Executive CY Leung said today, in response to a firebomb attack on media tycoon Jimmy Lai’s home and his Next Media group's office a day earlier.

Before attending the Executive Council meeting today, Mr Leung told reporters that Hong Kong is a society ruled by law and order and its security has been quite good. The Government takes illegal activities seriously regardless of whom the acts are against, he added.

He would not comment further on the case before the investigation concludes and its nature is known. He appealed to the public to provide information to the police to help solve the case.

Mr Leung stressed the importance of the rule of law, governing according to the law, and respecting judicial independence. These are all Hong Kong values, he added.

He said society should be concerned about issues such as external forces influencing Hong Kong's political activities, as relevant materials have been exposed over the past months and those involved have not denied their participation.
