Rise in holiday travellers expected

September 25, 2014

An estimated 6.84 million passengers are expected to pass through Hong Kong's immigration points from September 30 to October 7, up 11.4% on last year.

The Immigration Department forecasts that 5.16 million passengers will pass through land boundary control points during the holiday period, which includes National Day and the Chung Yeung Festival.

The number of people leaving Hong Kong by land is expected to peak on October 4, with about 367,000 departures, while inbound traffic will be heaviest on October 2, with about 366,000 arrivals.

About 2.15 million passengers are expected to travel through the Lo Wu Control Point, with a daily average of 269,000 people - making it the busiest entry point.

An average of 75,000 people a day are expected to use the Lok Ma Chau control point, 156,000 the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, and 110,000 the Shenzhen Bay control point.

To avoid congestion and long waits for immigration clearance, officials advise cross-boundary travellers to plan their trips in advance, avoid making journeys during busy periods, and to follow radio and television announcements for conditions at control points.

Estimated waiting times at all land boundary control points can be found on the department's free mobile app, available here.

Hong Kong residents who need help while travelling outside the city can call the immigration hotline, (852) 1868.
