Ivory stockpile disposal begins
May 15, 2014
A tonne of seized ivory was destroyed by the Government today.
Secretary for the Environment KS Wong said the disposal shows Hong Kong’s determined stance to curb illicit trade in ivory.
The stockpile was incinerated at the Chemical Waste Treatment Centre on Tsing Yi.
Twenty-eight tonnes of ivory seized in Hong Kong will be incinerated in batches by mid-2015.
Any further seizures will also be destroyed.
The Government will liaise with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora in combating illegal trade in ivory.
It will also enhance public awareness of endangered species and conservation.
