Drug abuse declines

March 27, 2014

There were 9% fewer drug abusers in 2013 compared to 2012 , although new cases show longer patterns of hidden drug use, the Action Committee Against Narcotics said today.

At the committee's quarterly meeting, chairman Prof Daniel Shek said he is concerned about the trend of hidden drug abuse.

The median time of newly reported abusers' drug-abuse history increased from 4.1 years in 2012 to 4.6 years in 2013.

Meanwhile, there was a 15% drop in the number of newly reported drug abusers, from 2,944 to 2,497.

The number of drug abusers under age 21 decreased 27%, from 1,623 to 1,182. Newly reported cases fell 30%, from 1,020 to 711.

Prof Shek noted that a public consultation on the RESCUE Drug Testing Scheme for drug abusers' early identification had attracted more than 2,500 submissions.

The committee is now analysing the views collected, and hopes to put forward recommendations within this year, he added.
